WINNERS
LEAH BLEICH
Leah Bleich is an award-winning director, producer, writer, editor, executive, part-time hype woman and full-time friend to dogs.
Leah has wanted to work in entertainment for as long as she can remember. After a decade performing in every play, short film, and onstage opportunity she could wrangle, she attended college at UC Santa Barbara and discovered a passion for behind-the-camera work. Since then, she has consistently seized every opportunity to immerse herself in film. In college, whether she was founding a 40-person film coalition (The Filmmaker’s Co-op), organizing cinematography conferences (CamCon), or building a community of female filmmakers (Women in Film), her personal life has always been subsumed by storytelling. Her directing thesis, “Elsewhere,” played at festivals around the country before receiving the top award in its category at the LA Music Video Festival.
She currently works as a Creative Executive at Solstice Studios. This position was preceded by an obligatory stint at Creative Artists Agency, as well as internships at companies including Blumhouse Films, The Exchange, Mandalay Sports Media, MAS Production. She continues to write and direct despite the deluge of script-reading that a development job entails. She most recently wrote, directed, shot, and co-edited a 10-minute short film, “Jack 2003,” which premiered at the Prague International Indie Film Festival.
She believes in the magic of storytelling, and she believes in entertainment’s ability to invoke positive change.
ABOUT THE PROJECT
THE MOON AND BACK is a light-hearted dramedy in the spirit of LADY BIRD meets BE KIND REWIND. One year after her father’s death, high school senior Lydia Lee feels completely lost… until she discovers something unexpected: “Space Chronicles,” the screenplay for a $200M+ space opera written by her dad. Equipped with just a VHS camera and pocket change, Lydia decides to make this script a reality. With this project, we have the opportunity to exemplify the indie film spirit through a story that proves that the limitations of storytelling extend only as far as your creativity. With a female presence behind the camera and in front of the camera (and behind the on-screen camera, too), I believe this project can be an inspiration for any budding young creator with a story to tell and the will to make their dream a reality.
